Registered again after 20 odd years.

The G is finally registered for Club use in NSW. Just waiting for my gauges to come back from Victoria, wheel alignment and a tune on the dyno.
I'm still not happy with the front of the car being so high. I might need to have some springs made 20mm lower than the standard ones.
Finally registered for club use and 60 days private
use due to the new logbook trial in NSW.
Dash is a mess while I wait for the instruments
to come back.

Dash is back out.

I have had some trouble with my new temp gauge and my rebuilt tacho. I had the tacho rebuilt by a fellow in Western Sydney who couldn't fix it (He still charged me). So I have removed the tacho and temp gauge and sent them to Howard Instruments in Victoria. I hope they can sort them out. Inside the car is a mess.

High tech suspension adjustment device.

The front suspension is sitting a bit high and I have been thinking about some shorter front springs, until I was talking to some of the "In the know" Renault guys who said the suspension needs to settle. I was told to loosen the bolts in the front suspension and allow the car to come down then to weigh it down and re-tighten. I placed car stands under the ball joints and loosened the bolts. It came down 15mm just with that. I then used my newly developed high tech suspension adjustment device as in the photo to add some weight. Once I had it down by about 50mm I re-tightened all the bolts, emptied the high tech device and put the wheels back on. Not sure it has made a great difference.

About 60 kg of weight added.
Sitting just a bit lower but not much.

Its back.

I drove the G home today from the mechanic, about 5km. Considering it has not been driven for 20 something years it went OK. I went through all the gears and the box was quiet and direct. It needs a wheel alignment but it appeared to drive straight.
I spent most of the day putting things back together that the auto electrician had removed and cleaned a lot of dust out of the boot (trunk). The water temp gauge is not working so I will need to look at that, also I will need to replace the NOS water pump with a new one I have. I think the fellow who repaired the gauges set the speedo to KPH as I was doing 60mph on the speedo and was actually doing no more than 60kph.
Here are the up to date photos showing the completed car 4 years after I started.
From this in 2012.
Passed roadworthy inspection ready for registration.

Dash is incomplete at the moment as I have to check
why the temp gauge is not working.

New or reconditioned parts that have let me down.

Now that the G is almost finished I will share the parts that have let me down in the past few weeks.

  1. New old stock water pump. Leaking and noisy bearing.
  2. Reconditioned Starter motor. Top bush not replaced.
  3. Reconditioned brake master cylinder. Allowed fluid past the caps.
  4. New fuel pump. Hit on the manifolds.
  5. Rebuilt tacho. Not working
  6. New temp gauge. Not working.

It lives.

There has been a few problems over the past few weeks, the latest being the starter motor. The starter was rebuilt like everything else from the wheel bearings to the wiring harness.
The engine was winding slowly so the starter was removed and checked finding the brass bush on the shaft was worn and out of shape allowing the armature to hit the windings. The bush was replaced and the starter re fitted. The starter was tested on the engine and found to be working correctly and to the point the engine fired up and ran nicely for the first time in 20 odd years.
I tried to upload a video however it wouldn't work for some reason. I should have the G home soon for a final tidy up and registration.

Off to be started.

The Gordini is finally off to the Auto electrician to have the final bit of wiring completed and then to be started for the first time in many years.
