Weber hassles.

I have been having some hassles with the weber carburetors since the G has been running.
First the bottom bowl covers are leaking and the carburetors will drain so when I park it I need to place an old towel under the carbies. It uses more fuel than my V12 Jaguar so there is a problem with the jetting or something. My mechanic has ordered new neoprene gaskets for the bottom bowel covers and new idle jets as it is running a bit rich.
This morning I removed the top cover to check the float levels and they are within tolerance being 5-11.5mm, mine measure 5.66mm to 14.08mm so they will need adjusting. I also removed the needle and seat to check the size, it should be a 150 (1.5mm) some people use a 175 which will over fuel. I removed the needle and seat but could not find a size anywhere on it.

Gearbox.

Took the G out today to warm up the gearbox, put it on the hoist and drained the mineral gearbox oil and replaced it with Penrite full synthetic race proven transaxle oil. Not sure if it has made any difference but time will tell. It is supposed to make the synchros work better.

A bit of a side note, it was very cold today so I turned on the heater while driving and I'm happy to say it works very well, the wife will be happy with that.

Clutch difficulties.

On the G's first outing I experienced some problems with the clutch and gear changes. At times changing gear was like pushing the gear stick into a rubber wall. The clutch was making a strange sound when disengaging.
I have cured the gear selecting problem by changing the 2 rubber blocks on the selector arm to gearbox for smaller ones. These are smaller in height and stiffer so gear changes are more precise.

As for the clutch noise I think that might be coming from the spigot shaft bush in the flywheel. If it does not quieten down it will mean an engine out repair.

Showing the different heights on the selector blocks.
I believe the taller one is for an R12.

First outing

The G's first outing was today where we attended the Bathurst Life Line Soar Ride and Shine at Bathurst airport. I have found a problem with the clutch and it was difficult to select 1st gear and the clutch was making a strange noise. I will look closer next week.
It got a lot of looks and there were quite a few people who knew what it was. Only Renault on the ground.

 On display.
Previous owner John Kitchen re-united with the G.

I spent a few hours today getting to know the Gordini. Took it for a wheel alignment in the morning, a quick lap of Mount Panorama (at 60kph), got another key cut, a price to have the front seats done and booked it in for an engine tune and a few other bits that still need to be done. In all I travelled about 25km around Bathurst, got a few funny looks and some admirers when it was parked.
Parked at the top of the mountain.

Finally Finished!

The pain is over, I have finally completed the G!
The dash is now complete with all instruments working. I had to lower the steering column by 6mm to allow the crash roll to fit on the instrument side.
The cars first outing should be the All French Car Day at Silverwater on 17 July 2016.
Hopefully some of the previous owners will be there to be reunited.

 Complete dash with working instruments.
Good to see the Tacho finally working.
The light at the end of the tunnel has finally been switched on.

Why must everything take so long?

I sent my Gauges off to an instrument repair company in Victoria 2 months ago and still I have not got them back. I did manage to speak to them about 4 weeks ago but they haven't return calls or emails.
So bloody frustrating.

Update.
Finally made contact. The gauges were promised to be finished last Friday as they were on the bench being done now!? A week later and still nothing.

Update#2.
I finally got my gauges back. The Tacho is now working as is the temperature gauge however even with written and phone instructions they still got the temp gauge wrong, putting the working gauge into the wrong body. I had to swap it all when I got them home. Finally able to complete the dash.
